Dying...but happily...
Okay so dying is an exaggeration, I'm not actually that ill, but a head cold I do have. Which makes things like breathing laborious, and breathing is definitely a must when it comes to running. Just walking to the fridge has me sounding like Darth Vader. And I've been doing a lot of walking to the fridge - damn it, why is junk food the go-to thing?! It seems if I'm not exercising. the natural desire to eat the entire contents of the house kicks in, why is that?!
But onto the 'happily' part: I HIT MY FUNDRAISING TARGET!!! Bang on £500 was raised as of Friday and I can only thank all who have donated - you are all lovely lovely people!
So now I've just got to run this thing...without a cold...and without ten extra pounds of weight thank you very much (someone remove the fridge, please). I'm trying not to worry myself over it but this was supposed to be my last week of training - 45 miles - before tapering down for the next three weeks - 25 miles, 15 miles, 4 miles. But I only got 15 miles done before said bug hit, so what now?!
Hold on...I'm away to Google this...
Apparently, getting a cold or the flu is very common when you start your taper (only wish my body realised we HAVEN'T STARTED THE TAPER YET)
"I think the theory is that you're not getting the regular run of adrenalin that's been produced week-in week-out with your regular training, so come the time of the taper you're tired, and you don't get the defence of adrenalin you're used to, so you're more vulnerable to colds and infections." - http://www.coolrunning.com.au/forums/?showtopic=6617
Right, I'm also reading that running will boost the immune system so, tonight I'm going to do a gentle few miles then hit the training again tomorrow. I'll keep everything slow and easy and boost up my miles with more short runs rather than fewer longer runs. End of next week or beginning of the following, I'll do a fairly long run and then taper quickly after that. Should work? Maybe? Hopefully.
The good thing is, having had this cold, I shouldn't get it again at the time of the race when people normally get them. Result.
So for now, it's goodbye from the quickly gaining weight runner.
